Jorhat is a small (by Indian standards) city in the east of Assam . It sprawls in the valley of the Brahmaputra , on the river Bhogda. In the 17th century, Jorhat was the last capital of the kingdom of Ahom. The ruler Gaurinath Singh united two settlements on both banks of the river Bhodga and named the new city Jorhat. In the same period, temples and reservoirs were built around the royal administrative buildings. In 1817 the city was destroyed by the Burmese conquerors of Assam.
