Short Description

Lonavla is famous for a popular candy known as 'chikki' and is also a major tourist stop-over between Mumbai and Pune. Apart from the breathtaking views of the lush-green trees and shrubs, the hills, the waterfalls and the Lonavla Chikki, there is a lot more to see at this mystifying hill station. Tourists can visit Khandala as well, which is a neighboring hill-station. The Karla, Bhaja and Bhedsa caves are a must-visit for those wanting to soak in medieval splendor. There are a few hill station points that offer a tremendous view, some of them being Rajmachi Point, Tiger Point, Lion Point, Duke's Nose and Shooting Point. Bollywood films have used the picturesque backdrop of Lonavla which is blessed with waterfalls, lakes and greenery. The name 'Lonavla' is derived from 'Len' and 'Avali' that roughly translates to 'the resting place of stones'. This scenic hill station was initially a part of the Yadava dynasty. Later, the Mughals used this beautiful hill-station as a strategic location against their rivals. In 1871, Lonavala and the sister hill-station, Khandala, were discovered by Lord Elphinstone. Nearby attractions are Lohgarh fort, Lion Point, Tiger Point and the Duke's Nose.

Detailed Itinerary

 
Day 1: Mumbai - Lonavala sightseeing (90 Km - 03 Hrs)

06:00 Hrs: Pick up from Hotel in Mumbai and drive to Lonavala. Lonavala is around 90 km away from Mumbai and takes 3 hours to reach up this beautiful hill resort.

Enroute visit to Karla and Bhaja Caves: Karla Caves: These caves can be visited en-route while on trip to Lonavala. Both groups of caves are quite similar to each other in style but built in different era. Karla caves is a complex of cave shrines built by Buddhist monk in 2nd century BC and later on developed over the years up to 2nd century AD. These are Indian Buddhist rock-cut cave shrines being maintained and protected under Archaeological Survey of India.

Bhaja Caves: Bhaja Caves, also an identical in architectural style are a group of rock-cut caves built in 200 BC. These groups of rock-cut caves are near to Karla Caves. Visiting these caves is worth spending some time en-route to Lonavala. 
Later precede your journey to Lonavala. Enjoy the day free at leisure. 

Visiting Lonavala : Lonavala is a beautiful hill station situated 90 km away from Mumbai on the Mumbai – Pune Expressway and well connected with other cities like Pune, Khopoli and Karjat. Lonavala is jewel of Sahyadri hills provides a great escape from the busy life of city like Mumbai. Pearl green hills, crystal clear waterfalls and ponds can be seen during monsoon. Tourists flock here in Monsson period the most. Lonavala turns lush green with crystal clear waterfalls during monsoon season. Lush green surroundings, peaceful environs and an amazing spots like Buddhist rock cut caves make Lonavala a wonderful weekend getaway from Mumbai. One can also visit Lonavala Lake and Bhusi Lake on day trip to Lonavala

Lonavala Lake: Beautiful Lake in the area is also an attraction to the tourist. Lonavala Lake is visited the most in monsoon season as it dries up during winters. Lake is surrounded by serene natural beauty making this place more attractive. 

Bhusi Dam:  Bhusi Dam is one of the famous tourist spot near Lonavala. One cannot miss to see this spot when it gets water over flown through stony terrain between Junes to September. It is a fantastic place to visit when you are in Lonavala.

After sightseeing tour of Lonavala, evening drive back to Mumbai. Upon arrival in Mumbai. Drop at Hotel / Residence.

    Just returned from 18 great and interesting days in India The trip was orchestrated for us and to our specification not an off the shelf tried and tested golden triangle jaunt, by Anu from Monks & Monkeys Travels. Not only did they deliver on every level, Transport, Hotels Agents on the ground meeting and greeting us at every new destination, after we had suffered the worst experience possible in an overnight sleeper, which we had stipulated 1st class it may have said 1st class it was not in our eyes or nose. I contacted them on arrival in Varanasi and within an hour they had organised and paid on our behalf for flights and a hotel back in Delhi to avoid the indignity of another night on the train.(a local business man I spoke to put it that' the clientele in overnight sleepers are only the top class of those who travel by train. We had changed two of the hotels Anu had suggested before we went and interestingly our choices turned out to be the two worst hotels we stayed at. We had paid approx. a third of the cost as a deposit and were only expected to pay the balance on arrival in Delhi. Can't think of any British agents who work that way. All our drivers were excellent as were our internal flights. Guides were always prompt, knowledgeable and willing to tell touts and others we were not interested. probably the equivalent of our own phrase which encourages an individual to urinate elsewhere! So 100% satisfaction from us I will be recommending them unreservedly to my friends who are interested in India trips.
