Srinagar - “Paradise on Earth”, located in the heart of the Kashmir valley is the summer state capital of Jammu and Kashmir. This spectacular hill station is at an altitude of 1,730 m above sea level. The word Srinagar literally means “the city of wealth”. As the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, the city is renowned for its traditional handicrafts, lakes, gardens and houseboats. It's an ideal destination that can be visited throughout the year. This hill station is visited by travellers from outside India as well. A variety of tourist attractions makes the place worth visiting many times. The Houseboats are generally made from local cedar-wood and measure 24–38 metres in length and 3–6 metres in width and are graded in a similar fashion to hotels according to level of comfort. Many of them have lavishly furnished rooms, with verandas and a terrace to serve as a sun-deck or to serve evening cocktails. After lunch take Shikara ride on Dal Lake. The scenery around is breathtaking and tempting that might make you erupt in joy. You can also shop while taking a Shikara ride visiting floating markets. It is the centre of tourist activity in Srinagar and the best way to observe the surrounding flora and fauna and spot the different kinds of birds and aquatic plants and animals that form a part of the eco system.
Overnight stay on Houseboat.

Day 2: Srinagar – Sonamarg (80 km – 2 hours)- Srinagar sonamarg – “The Meadow of Gold”.

The drive to Sonamarg is through the Sindh Valley which presents yet another spectacular facet of countryside in Kashmir. Situated at an altitude of 2730 m, Sonamarg has, as its backdrop, snowy mountains against a cerulean sky. The Sindh River that meanders through the valley abounds with trout. Ponies can be hired for the trip up to Thajiwas glacier, which is a major local attraction during the summer months. Sonamarg is the base of a major trek that passes along several mountain lakes –Vishansar, Kishansar, Gadsar, Satsar and Gangabal.  Sonamarg is also a base for undertaking the pilgrimage to the holy Amarnath. King Awantivarman, who ruled Kashmir during 9th century, built both the temples – Shiva Temple and Avantiswami Temple.  The Shiva Temple is renovated and in daily use, while Avantiswami Temple, which was dedicated to Lord Vishnu is now a ruin. Both the temples reflect Greek style of architecture.
Overnight Stay at Pahalgam.

Day 4: Pahalgam - Srinagar

Visit Mughal Gardens:  Nishat Bagh “The garden of pleasure” built by Asif Khan - brother in law of Jehangir in 1632 AD. And Shalimar Bagh “Abode of love” built by Jehangir for his wife Empress Noor Jehan. Asia's largest Tulip Garden on the banks of Dal Lake - the 15-hectare garden in the foothills of Zabarwan Range. All the gardens are situated on the bank of Dal Lake with the Zabarwan Mountains in the background. Jama Masjid is among the oldest mosques in Srinagar and displays a monument of Islamic architecture. It was built in 1674 with four spires tower, 370 pillars, prayer halls, etc. Each pillar is made from a single piece of deodar trunk. The temple was destroyed and restored many times. It is also known as the Friday Mosque. Hazratbal Mosque located on the banks of Dal Lake, the Mosque is made from white marble and a fusion of Kashmiri and Mughal styles of architecture can be noticed in its construction. The Mosque is also called Dargah Sharif, Asar-e-Sharif, and Madinat-us-Sani. There is a shrine in the Mosque which is believed to contain a relic-a hair of the Islamic Prophet Muhammad. The Rozabal Shrine in Srinagar is one of the biggest mysteries of the world. It contains the tomb of Yuza Asaf who is supposed to be none other than Jesus Christ!   According to traditions dating 1st century AD and several ancient works in Persian, Arabic and Sanskrit Cultures, Jesus survived the crucifixion and migrated to live in Kashmir. There are tantalizing architectural, inscriptional, anthropological, and archaeological document evidences which strongly indicate this. This hypothesis makes the Rozabal Shrine a unique place in the world where all religions seem to unite, conveying the message of love, peace and harmony. “Throne of Solomon” is a large ancient temple situated on the top of a hillock near the Dal Lake in Srinagar. The temple was built by Jalauka, the son of the great Emperor Ashoka, about 200 B.C.  It was renamed Sankarachariya by the Hindu Maharaja in 1848. Adi Shankaracharya (788-820AC) lived, meditated and did Tapas (penance) here to review Hinduism which had been eclipsed by Buddhism. He worshipped the Shiva Lingam, which is still found in the Sanctum Sanctorum. It is believed , that Adi Shankaracharya "attained spiritual knowledge" at this particular place and after that went out and formed the four Hindu schools of Advaita, the philosophy of non-dualism.Also visit the local crafts market and shop for unique Papier-mâché and Walnut Wood items.

Just returned from 18 great and interesting days in India The trip was orchestrated for us and to our specification not an off the shelf tried and tested golden triangle jaunt, by Anu from Monks & Monkeys Travels. Not only did they deliver on every level, Transport, Hotels Agents on the ground meeting and greeting us at every new destination, after we had suffered the worst experience possible in an overnight sleeper, which we had stipulated 1st class it may have said 1st class it was not in our eyes or nose. I contacted them on arrival in Varanasi and within an hour they had organised and paid on our behalf for flights and a hotel back in Delhi to avoid the indignity of another night on the train.(a local business man I spoke to put it that' the clientele in overnight sleepers are only the top class of those who travel by train. We had changed two of the hotels Anu had suggested before we went and interestingly our choices turned out to be the two worst hotels we stayed at. We had paid approx. a third of the cost as a deposit and were only expected to pay the balance on arrival in Delhi. Can't think of any British agents who work that way. All our drivers were excellent as were our internal flights. Guides were always prompt, knowledgeable and willing to tell touts and others we were not interested. probably the equivalent of our own phrase which encourages an individual to urinate elsewhere! So 100% satisfaction from us I will be recommending them unreservedly to my friends who are interested in India trips.

I know I am pretty late after my holidays in submitting my feedback, maybe I need another holiday. Just to say that we had a great time in Kerala in visiting the various places. The arrangements made through your company with Anju Malavia were excellent and were as promised. Just a few pointers in that care should be taken when arranging visits on places of interest in that for us as muslims to have seen more of islamic history with other sites as optional. Also for the driver to be aware of where the mosques for prayer time are as well halaal eating places. Also experiencing the windy roads and travel time a +-70km per day should be considered from destination to destination in order for it not to be so hectic. Overall I would not hessitate to book another holiday through Anju nor have any problems referring others through you.
