Rameshwaram Island is known because here Lord Shiva was worshiped by Rama (the hero of Ramayana and the avatar of Vishnu ) after defeating the demon Ravana (the king of Sri Lanka), who kidnapped Rama's wife Sita. On this occasion, the most famous local temple Ramalingeshwara was built, which is why Rameshvaram was counted among the 7 holy cities of India.
